How long does an evaluation take?
Times vary by age, service authorization and person.  Most appointment take roughly three hours.
Just what is a neuropsychological evaluation?
A neuropsych eval is fundamentally a comprehensive assessment of an individual's brain functioning based on their performance of a battery of testing procedures.  Areas assessed can include intellectual ability, visual motor functioning, academic skills, memory and attention, executive functioning, adaptive functioning, personality and emotional functioning.
What will I be doing during this evaluation?
Because the brain is so multifaceted and complex, it is necessary to perform a broad range of tasks to gain an accurate picture.  The evaluation includes activities such as drawing, doing puzzles, memory tests and problem solving tasks, academic tests and tests of imagination. Sometimes, questionnaires are used as well. There are no needles, electrodes or brain scans.
What ages do you work with?
Dr. Callahan's preference is to meet with persons age 6 and older, including adults and the elderly.  In unusual situations, he will meet with children as young as 4.
What should I bring with me?
It is important to bring any previous assessments performed by other psychologists or schools to the session.  Any other information regarding the client's background is helpful as well.  When in doubt, bring it!
What should I tell  my child when I schedule a neuropsychological evaluation?
Simple explanations are best.  Letting a child know that Dr. Callahan will try to make sure that people are helping him or her out the best way is often enough.  You can let the child know that they will be doing many different things, including drawing, puzzles and school work.
